This PhD Combined Counseling-School Psychology program is located at the Flagstaff Mountain Campus in the College of Education and is closely aligned with the strategic priorities of NAU to elevate excellence for a bold and boundless future. About the Position
The Department of Educational Psychology at Northern Arizona University is hiring for a for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position beginning Fall 2024. Initial review of applications will begin on January 8, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. We seek applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track position to serve as the Doctoral Training Director and Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology in our APA-accredited Combined Counseling/School Psychology PhD program.
The Doctoral Training Director plays an important role in guiding our Combined PhD program in providing the best clinical training for our doctoral students. The primary role of the Doctoral Training Director is to provide robust and supportive leadership in our Combined PhD program, for its trainees, and associated supervisors. The Training Director works closely with our Department Chair in attaining these goals and serves as the administrative leader of an APA-accredited Combined PhD program.
We particularly encourage candidates who can enhance the department’s commitment to diversity through teaching, supervision, and outreach. We are interested in candidates with a passion for high-quality clinical care, clinical supervision, conducting research, and teaching at the graduate level. The successful applicant will join existing graduate faculty in the teaching and mentoring of PhD students. In addition, there are many rich opportunities for collaboration and clinical training in Northern Arizona.
Our program is one of four APA-accredited Combined Counseling/School Psychology programs in the United States. In Spring 2022, the APA Commission on Accreditation granted full accreditation of the doctoral Counseling/School PhD program at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. The Department of Educational Psychology is housed in the College of Education and offers the Combined Counseling/School Psychology PhD program, a School Psychology Ed.S. program, master’s programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, Counseling – Student Affairs, and Human Relations; and a bachelor’s program in Applied Human Behavior. Faculty in the department work collaboratively to support student learning across programs.
Teach graduate level courses and develop curriculum in areas of expertise.
Maintain a research portfolio in line with tenure-track faculty requirements.
Participate in relevant institutional and professional service.
Doctoral Training Director-specific duties and responsibilities
Work with program faculty to provide culturally grounded and mission driven leadership and administration of the Combined PhD training program, including the implementation of policies and practices to advance an equitable, inclusive learning and training environment.
Lead program recruitment, admissions, and student orientation, in line with the mission of NAU.
Provide support and mentorship for students in the PhD program, including monitoring progress in the program, practicum placements, and, and problem solving.
In coordination with program faculty, help to determine internship eligibility and readiness, work with students on the internship placement process, and correspond with internship supervisors about placement, experience, and performance evaluations.
Provide leadership in the department on current and new APA training requirements, and respond to program inquiries from APA, APPIC, and assist with the maintenance of program accreditation including annual reporting.
Represent and advocate for the training program to professional organizations such as APA, APPIC.
This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
This is a tenure-eligible, 9 month position, starting in August 2024.
Eligibility for licensure in Arizona; licensed in Arizona by start date. Candidate must be eligible to be licensed as a psychologist by the State of Arizona at time of application.
Prior teaching experience at the graduate level.
Prior experience working clinically with diverse populations.
Emerging or established research portfolio representative of a Counseling Psychology professional identity.
Earned Doctorate in Counseling Psychology or related field from an APA-accredited program.
Demonstrated success or experience in teaching graduate level courses in counseling psychology.
Evidence or strong potential to develop and maintain independent and collaborative scholarship in area of expertise.
Evidence or strong potential to prepare and manage external grant proposals/programs in area of expertise.
Demonstrated efficacy in working with people from a variety of backgrounds; and understanding of rural and southwest communities.
Experience supporting or leading an APA-Accredited doctoral program.
Experience with APPIC and/or APA Accreditation processes.
Experience supporting or leading in program development.
Prior experience with supervision and training of graduate level students
Prior experience supervising doctoral, interns, or postdoctoral trainees in a clinical setting.

Compensation & Benefits
Salary range begins at $70,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate’s qualifications and related experience.
This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU’s BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment.
