The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, offering the B.Sc. in Geology and B.Sc. in Environmental Science, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the field of earth science, to begin fall 2023. The successful candidate will teach a subset of courses in the following topics: earth materials, structural geology and tectonics, field geology, GIS, applied geophysics, environmental geology, and introductory geology. The successful candidate will be thoroughly involved in senior research projects that often have an environmental or applied focus and will have the opportunity to engage in summer research involving students.
The department has three permanent faculty positions and a full-time lecturer. Teaching load is 9 contact hours per week in one term and 12 in the other term. Currently there are 5 geology and 40 environmental science majors. Department faculty members are generalists by necessity but have research areas of expertise that include sedimentology and stratigraphy, fluvial and coastal geomorphology, glacial geology, Quaternary paleoclimate and paleoecology, freshwater ecosystems, and geoarchaeology.
Located in the middle of the Green Mountains, the department has direct access to field-based learning. Faculty members are expected to maintain active research that includes undergraduates when appropriate; all department seniors conduct research mentored by faculty. The department houses extensive field equipment and XRD, SEM, and ICP instrumentation, all supported by a department technician.
Tenure-track faculty receive competitive startup packages. Professional travel funding and competitive internal research and publication expense grants are available to all faculty.
Ph.D. in the earth sciences or related field (ABD considered); a strong commitment to the education of undergraduates in the arts, sciences and engineering (prior teaching experience at the college level is preferred).
