Assistant Teaching Professor in Data Science
Unit Mission Statement
Data Science is the study and application of methods that extract knowledge from frequently large, diverse sets of data. Data Science at W&M provides a novel learning environment. We push students beyond methods and towards critically considering the implications of big data and algorithms on our society.
The Data Science unit at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Data Science (non-tenure eligible). Appointment will begin August 10, 2024.
We are primarily interested in a teacher with strong expertise in Data Science (DS) who will develop and offer Data Science fundamentals courses. In addition to Data Science majors, interest in data science coursework at William & Mary also comes from students pursuing degrees in multiple other
disciplines, from the computational and natural sciences to the humanities and social sciences. Accordingly, the successful candidate will develop course offerings for this diverse population, assisting us in our effort to raise data literacy across campus while also maintaining our rigorous Data Science program.
Successful applicants are expected to establish and maintain a vibrant teaching portfolio that inspires a highly motivated student body. The position carries a typical teaching load of three courses in each of the fall and spring semesters. The position has an initial 2-year appointment term.
At a minimum, applicants should hold a MS degree in Data Science, Computer Science, or Statistics or a closely aligned discipline by the time the appointment begins on August 10, 2024.
Candidates with an advanced degree in other fields will be considered if they have published work that utilizes extensive big data analytics or have experience working in industry. A Ph.D. degree in the above fields by the time of appointment, and/or demonstrated teaching experience are highly desirable, as is previous experience in interdisciplinary environments.
