HVAC Level One Teacher – Classroom Instruction
Required Education and Work History:
Seeking an applicant with teaching/training experience and associate degree in heating and cooling (minimum standard is a high school diploma or equivalency) along with 6 years of demonstrated employment using skills in HVAC. The candidate must also document achievement or willingness to attain NATE and/or EPA608 certifications.
Required Skills and Competencies:
The HVAC teacher leads their class through the ACCA EPA 608 Certification Test Prep Course designed by Duncan Supply. This class is hosted by Area 31 Career Center in partnership with Wayne Township Adult Education (WTAE) with the goal of building relevant workforce and employment skills. The teacher is responsible for:
Retaining 95% of all seated students with an industry aligned attendance rate of 90% or better;
Teach Duncan Supply and WTAE endorsed curriculum for the class;
Monitors and controls classroom safety, tools, usability of equipment classroom and lab, lab and test preparations.
Knowledgeable in the field of electrical, plumbing, and HVAC; must know motors, compressors, vacuum pumps, heating – cooling controls;
Competent in blueprint reading and
Provide hvac lab demonstrations and document learning by video for missing students;
Lead 95% of students who complete the class advance to achieve the EPA 608 certification under the refrigerant recovery and recycling program of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). There are four sections to the test. The first is the Core, which must be passed, along with at least one of the three other sections. For heating, air conditioning and refrigeration technicians, the EPA has three levels of certification:
Type I – Small Appliances
Type II – High Pressure Appliances
Type III – Low Pressure Appliances
Collaborate with WTAE to ensure 65% of students demonstrate math gains in industry related curriculum;
Ensure all students submit their industry resume to WTAE staff member before mid-semester break;
Engage 5-7 heating and cooling companies as guest speakers, broker connections to field experience ride along experiences, and work to maintain a job board of available positions in the field;
Create a positive work environment by ensuring Area 31 Career Center’s daytime teacher’s class is in proper order for daytime classes; and
Proactively engage WTAE CT Supervisor about any student concerns about academic progress, barriers, or attendance issues;
Document and submit attendance weekly; cumulative attendance, grade book, student evaluations, and proof of EPA 608 to CEO of Duncan Supply and WTAE CT Supervisor.
Coordinate inventory and ordering with Duncan Supply one week prior to class;
The candidate must demonstrate a passion for advancing the field by ensuring students achieve a level of excellence to become an HVAC technician.
